Dear Neah-Kah-Nie Staff,

Welcome back to the Neah-Kah-Nie School District!  Summer went by in a flash.  It feels like yesterday I saw many of you at the NKN High School sponsored pancake breakfast on July 4th. I hope you had time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather on the north Oregon coast or wherever you vacationed.

Neah-Kah-Nie School District welcomes our new teachers Melinda Rumage, Kimberly Baertlein, Glenn Stelson, Jenna Angelini, Kate Romanov, Ashley Verhulst, Brianna Moses, James Billstine, Jenna Meeks, Beth Gienger (HS Math), Carlotta Roddy, and Rhonda Scott.  We are also excited to welcome all our new classified staff.  Our new educators will complement the climate and culture of the entire school district.  Soon it will be apparent to all new staff, the main focus of the school district is people: students, staff, volunteers, parents, and our community partners.

As I reflect on our clients, our students, I am very excited for incoming preschool student Asher Vandecoevering and the next thirteen years he will be challenged to do his very best at NKN.  What will Asher’s educational experiences be like in preschool, elementary, middle and high school?  I will be thrilled for Asher as he learns his ABC and numbers from preschool staff Miss Angie and Miss Jaki.  Asher will learn an amazing number of site words in Mr. Kinstedt’s classroom and will learn place value from Mrs. Clark.  He will enjoy the nutritious food prepared by Catherine and Robyn at Garibaldi.  Asher will be intrigued writing a story on a Chromebook in Mr. Gordon’s class.  He may participate in Mr. Duer’s after school running club.  Maybe Asher will take first place in the Battle of the Book’s competition under the guidance of Mrs. Shepard.  I bet he will be the star in Ms. Harmon’s STEM robotic’s class at the middle school.  Asher will definitely enjoy band and choir from Mr. Zaugg and Mr. Simpson.  How fortunate Asher will be to represent NKN High School at regional, state, and national Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competitions with Ms. Jackson, Ms. Paulissen, and Ms. Marden!

As you return to school, please take a moment to reflect on how your daily work will teach Asher, and all students, to collaboratively solve problems; to be safe, responsible, and respectful; to have an appreciation for the arts; to be highly literate; to excel academically; and to be model citizens.

All new staff, and some veteran staff, will participate in a technology workshop August 24 from 8:00 am -12 pm.  New staff orientation will be August 24 from 1:00-4:00 pm.

Teachers first day is August 26.  School board members and administrators will serve breakfast to staff Wednesday, August 31, starting at 8:00 a.m. at the high school cafeteria.

Thank you for your sustained support of all students and the NKN School District.  The 2016-17 school year will be an amazing year for students, staff, and the communities we serve.

Paul Erlebach, Superintendent
