Greetings Neah-Kah-Nie Staff,

Welcome to the start of the 2018-19 school year!  The beginning of the new school year is always an exciting time for veteran staff to welcome new staff to the Neah-Kah-Nie School District, to participate in invigorating professional development, to appreciate all the summer facility and maintenance projects, and to prepare classrooms for students.  With this in mind, I would like you to join me to continue our important work of the school district’s mission-Prepare students to become productive and responsible citizens for an ever-changing world through diverse educational opportunities in partnership with the community.

School board members and district administrators invite you to join us for our annual “Back to School” breakfast Wednesday, August 29 at 8:00 a.m.  At this time, we introduce new staff, present certificates of appreciation to staff for years of service, recognize last year’s Treasure Award recipients, and highlight priorities for the school year.

I would like to welcome our new staff.  Neah-Kah-Nie High School graduate Selena Clifton will join Sarah Christensen as new teachers at Garibaldi Grade School.  Neah-Kah-Nie High School alumni Kristina Burdick will teach at Nehalem Elementary.  Jay Blake is proud to be a NKN Middle School Raider teacher.  Thomas Nugent has already joined the team at NKN Middle School as the lead custodian.  “Bien venidos” to Jenni Smith as the new NKN High School Spanish language teacher. Mark McLaughlin, NKN High School graduate, will teach math at the high school.  Susan St. John and Breanna Uptegrove are new instructional assistants at Nehalem Elementary.  Theresa Manzer is a new instructional assistant at Garibaldi Grade School.

When you return to your schools, you will notice some of the capital improvement projects the district has invested in to impact student learning and maintain integrity of facilities.  These improvements include seismic upgrade at Nehalem Elementary, high school grandstand renovation, technology upgrades, painting and carpet projects, new furniture, high school welding lab, etc.

More than 800 students will soon return to school on September 4, excited to see old friends and meet new friends, these students will participate in a variety of after school activities, and will be challenged in the classroom.  Your endearing work will enable all these students to reach their full potential.

I am eager to work with all of you to continue to meet the school district’s mission.

Respectfully,

Paul Erlebach, Superintendent
