Invites applications for the position of SUPERINTENDENT

The Neah-Kah-Nie School District Board of Directors is seeking a highly qualified and energetic candidate with visionary leadership skills and positive experience in education administration to serve as Superintendent beginning July 1, 2023. The successful candidate must have experience as an administrator, excellent communication skills, unquestionable integrity and be willing to be involved in the community. 
Location: Rockaway Beach, Oregon | Enrollment: 783 students
Salary: $140,000 to $160,000 annually, plus benefits

The Position
The successful candidate must be committed to educational reform and improving achievement for all students. They must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with the board, staff and community to achieve the district’s goals and hold or qualify for an Oregon superintendent's license and provide proof of compliance with OAR 333-019-1030 (COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements for Teachers and School Staff).

The successful candidate will also have the following personal and professional qualities:

  • Effective communication and listening skills; open-minded.
  • Puts KIDS first; is committed to serving all kids.
  • Is personable/approachable while keeping an open mind; good sense of humor.
  • Background in teaching and building administration; instructional leader with strong academic credentials.
  • Highly visible in our community and schools.
  • Ability to build and sustain strong, effective family/community/business partnerships that impact student success.
  • Proven ability to make tough decisions when necessary and effectively communicate the reasons (transparency).
  • Understands Oregon school finance and timber revenue; demonstrates sound fiscal management and strong budgeting skills; well organized.
The District
The Neah-Kah-Nie School District serves approximately 783 students in two elementary, one middle and one high school. The district employs a staff of 63 licensed employees, 63 classified employees, seven confidential employees, and seven administrative team members including the superintendent, business manager, and five other administrators. The district has a general operating fund budget of about $18.9 million plus another $2.9M in grant funding and a capital improvement bond. 
 
The district is proud of its small, personal schools that maximize their financial resources.  A seven-member school board and a dedicated, caring staff are intent on maintaining the emphasis on individual student needs and on the safe and secure environment in their schools.  Students excel in academics, sports, and extra-curricular activities. The schools are the cultural center of the community and the district reaps the reward of many community members, retired citizens, parents, and students who volunteer in schools, competitive sports, activities and exciting social events. 

The district strives for a balance between strong academic achievement, athleticism, and extracurricular activities.  A commitment to excellence in education in light of the economic reality offers a climate for innovation and creative problem-solving.

The Community
Tucked away on the north Oregon coast, bordered by soft, white sand beaches and the majestic Coast range mountains, the Neah-Kah-Nie School District's community actually comprises the small coastal towns of Bay City, Garibaldi, Rockaway Beach, Wheeler, Nehalem, and Manzanita.  Each separate community brings its own tradition and history to the schools, creating a unique environment combining the fresh air of the sea and mountain timberlands with the charm of boutiques, antique shops, and art galleries.  Area residents enjoy outstanding nature and recreational opportunities in a locale providing both a chance for quiet escape and a bit of adventure.  Crabbing, clamming, surf and deep sea fishing opportunities abound.  Whale watching, hiking and exploration entice.  The world famous Tillamook Cheese Factory is just minutes away.  Portland, Oregon’s largest city, is about 90 miles away.
 
The communities that comprise Neah-Kah-Nie School District have a population of over 4,500 citizens.  Commercial and sport fishing, timber, tourism, dairy farming, and light manufacturing are the area’s primary industries.
