Board of Directors
Sandra Tyrer
Sandy earned her bachelor’s degree in Business and Management from Purdue University. She worked as a business leader for several years for Fortune 500 companies including Xerox, CVS, and General Electric. Prior to her work as a business leader, Sandy served in active duty on the U.S. Marine Corps for eight years and the reserves for an additional two years.
In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for the Neah-Kah-Nie School District, she volunteers regularly for Adventist Health, and her local church. She also served on a school board in Illinois for ten years.
It was my honor to serve my country and is my honor and privilege to serve my community. I am proud to be an active member of Neah-Kah-Nie School District’s Board of Directors. The Board’s foundation is based on forward thinking, fiscal responsibility, and the commitment to provide the highest quality education in an environment that is safe and conducive to learning.
Joe Carr
Joe was born and raised on the shores of Lake Erie in Ashtabula, Ohio. After graduating with a B.A. in English from The Ohio State University, Joe moved to North Carolina and began his
teaching career at an alternative school for adolescent boys. During that time, he earned his Master’s in Education and full teaching credential. Joe then moved to Portland, OR and worked
as a teacher and then in administration for Portland Public Schools.
After ten years of work in education, Joe transitioned to working with vulnerable adults as a social worker and guardian. In 2020, Joe and his family moved to Bay City where he could work
remotely and be close to the water again.
Joe is a volunteer firefighter for Bay City and a mentor for Ohio State students. Joe plays electric bass (decently) and drums (poorly). He has three dogs and they are all named after the
band The Ramones. He is also a human film encyclopedia and loves going to the movies. He likes to give back and be involved in his community and is excited to use his background in
education to help provide a rigorous and enjoyable learning experience for our students.
Joe’s spouse Ashley works for the district, and both of his children attend Garibaldi Grade School. The family loves living here and loves the school and people they have met. When they aren’t working and playing in their yard and garden, the family loves exploring the endless delights of the Oregon coast.
Marisa Bayouth Real
Marisa grew up by the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. The trees and rain called to her and she found her true home state when she moved to Portland to attend Lewis and Clark College.
She majored in English literature and minored in theater, even getting to spend a semester overseas studying in London. A highlight of that time was when she was able to perform a
monologue on the stage of the Old Globe Theater during a workshop.
After earning both her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Lewis and Clark, Marisa missed the ocean. Neah-Kah-Nie High School had an open teaching position and for the next 17 years she
taught 6th-12th grade. She specialized in teaching academic and creative writing, Shakespeare as both literature and theater, acting, and curriculum addressing historic inequalities through the
world. Marisa’s driving force was to give her students the skills, power, and confidence to be independent learners.
Currently Marisa is a full-time parent. She also gardens, reads, and can be counted on to procrastinate doing the dishes. With her husband teaching at the middle school and son attending Nehalem Elementary, NKN is still a huge part of her family. Serving the students, staff, and community as a board member feels like the missing piece to the family puzzle.
Michele Aeder
Michele Aeder has been an active member of the Neah-Kah-Nie School District Board of Directors since April 2016.
Michele has worked in pupil transportation for 31 years. She is past board chair of the Women’s Crisis Center (Tides of Change) in Tillamook. Michele volunteered at Women’s Crisis Center for 35 years.
Michele is a committee member of the Inclusion Alliance, NKN school district’s equity committee.
Michele has two children and five grandchildren. She enjoys visits with family, practicing yoga, and learning construction skills. Michele and her husband, Pat, are building a cabin in eastern Oregon.
Randy Schultz – Photo Coming Soon
Randy Schultz retired from a 40-year career in public education to Rockaway Beach in March of 2020. His career spanned the gamut, from substitute teacher, full time elementary teacher to admin at the K12 level. After earning his Doctorate in Education, he made the move to the University where he was an associate professor of education, a grant administrator and eventually capped his career as the Dean of a satellite campus for California State University, Bakersfield. He is looking forward to supporting the educational goals of the NKN district.
He and his wife Valerie have been married for 44 years and they have 4 amazing adult children. They enjoy traveling and visiting their two grandkids.
Renae Scalabrin
Renae Scalabrin moved to Manzanita six years ago from California with her husband and two children.
Renae’s background is in human resources, and she began her career working with Cargill. She then transitioned to the international sales field with Showcase Entertainment and later moved into the world of project management for construction. She currently manages six vacation homes in the Manzanita & Neahkahnie area. Her diverse background allows her to look at things through a business lens, which is very important for a Board member.
Her two children, 12 and 9, keep her very busy with sports and all of their activities. She is very pleased to be on the Board to lend a first-hand perspective as a parent with students in the district.
Renae currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Mudd Nick Foundation, where she heads up the Development Committee. Each year the Development Committee works to secure all of the fantastic items up for auction at our annual event.
Renae is also the President of the Nehalem Elementary Parent Council and is very involved in their fundraising efforts and programs. Each year, the Parent Council raises enough money to provide all of the school supplies for every student in the school.
Renae is originally from Iowa, a graduate of the University of Iowa, and a huge supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Go Hawks!
